One weekend in Dundee

May 01, 2020
A view of Dundee

With domestic tourism increasing 40% since 2016, Staycations are officially on the rise! Situated on the East of Scotland, Dundee is the perfect city to explore at any time of the year with award-winning attractions, beautiful walks and views and of course, plenty of good eats. So let’s crack on with your weekend in The City of Discovery…

Friday

Welcome to Dundee! If you are driving, you may be heading along Riverside Drive so keep your eyes peeled (passengers only) for our famous Highland Cows. The cattle live in Riverside Nature Reserve so if you fancy stretching your legs and taking in some of Dundee’s beautiful River Tay views, park up and have a wee wander!

West Park is only a 5 minute drive from the Nature Reserve. If you have travelled by bus or train, there are excellent bus links from the City Centre to West Park or alternatively you could hop in a taxi. Once you have arrived at West Park, check-in with a member of our friendly reception team and then head to your room. Our budget-friendly accommodation is perfect for those looking for a quiet location in a beautiful residential area.

Bellies will probably be rumbling by now so we recommend taking a trip along the Perth Road. You can easily walk from West Park or catch a bus. There is something for everyone along the Perth Road from Mexican at Más, Italian at Don Michele or a more Scottish affair at 172 The Caird. If it’s an adults only trip, stop off the Jute Café and Bar in the DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts) for some delicious cocktails before heading back to base.

Saturday

Before you start a day of exploring in the City of Discovery, you may wish to discover some brunch! For a local, city centre meal try Pacamara or The West House or if you don’t mind a short drive, Jessie’s Kitchen in Broughty Ferry or Kitschnbake in Newport offer some amazing, unique brunch options. Be sure to book in advance as most of these restaurants fill up fast!

Dundee is a city steeped in history and what better place to learn than in Scotland’s Top Visitor Attraction, The McManus. The city centre museum features eight open gallery spaces, featuring internationally-significant items and displays and gives a fascinating insight into Dundee and its’ development. It’s also FREE!

The McManus in Dundee

From the Victorian Gothic to the uber-modern, head down to the waterfront to see Dundee’s newest and most eye-catching attraction, The V&A. This is the only V&A outside of London and its’ impressive architecture and exhibits have drawn in visitors from around the globe. Right next door to the V&A, you’ll also find The RRS Discovery – an Antarctic exploring ship and another of Dundee’s award-winning attractions.

For those of you who may wish to skip the history and head straight to the shops, the Overgate Centre has a variety of high-street shops for you to shop til’ you drop! If you fancy some boutique local shops, the Perth Road or Broughty Ferry should be on your list.

Hungry? For something a little different for dinner, try Gidi Grill. This West African & Caribbean inspired restaurant is based in the City Quay and serves up some of the most delicious dishes. There is also a children’s menu available for those less adventurous little ones.

Sunday

Sundays are all about the great outdoors and with Dundee named the Sunniest City in Scotland, hopefully you’ll be in luck! We have a number of beautiful country parks around the Dundee area so you won’t be short of choice. Camperdown Park is only a 10 minute drive from West Park and has not only plenty of green space, there’s also a Wildlife Centre and large adventure play area for children.

For all of the golf lovers, Dundee is the perfect base with world famous courses nearby. St Andrews, Scotland’s ‘Home of Golf’ offers a fantastic experience for any golfer and it’s only 30 minutes away in the car. Carnoustie Golf Links is not far from West Park too; a spectacular 18 holes to enjoy.

To conclude your weekend in Dundee, head up the Law for the perfect viewpoint of the sunset over Dundee. From the top, you will have 360 views of the city including some of the attractions you have visited and you will also see the two closest football grounds in Britain. Home to Dundee United FC and Dundee FC, the stadiums are only around 200 yards apart! As the sun sets on your weekend in the City of Discovery, head back to West Park to relax for the evening before check-out in the morning.

There are many more things to see and do in and around Dundee so stay tuned for more blogs coming soon!
